Arbor Day

Arbor Day 2025 was a great success. Coordinated between the Alabaster Parks & Rec Dept. (Morgan Lawley) and the Beautification Board, this event exceeded last year’s participation, and the edition of the Master Gardeners to consult with about planting information was very well received.

A few highlights:

  • Over 250 people attended
  • 186 Plants and 238 seedlings distributed
  • Seven Shelby County Master Gardeners answered questions on proper tree planting, etc.
  • Eight ROTC members and Chief Long carried trees to vehicles

Benefits of trees beyond your backyard: Arbor Day Foundation

  • Cooling Shade: The canopy of your tree helps lower city temps by as much as 10 degrees, shielding us from the dangers of urban heat island effect.
  • Cleaner Air: Leaves filter airborne pollutants to improve the quality of the air we breathe.
  • Rainwater Management: A mature tree can intercept 1,000 gallons of rainwater per year, a critical function in preventing floods.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Trees provide food and shelter for a wide range of wildlife, including birds, pollinators, and small animals.
  • Community Well-Being: The presence of trees improves mental health and promotes physical activity.

Photo caption: Approximately 40 people attended David Doggett’s Beautification Board-sponsored talk about planting, transplanting, and re-potting trees and shrubs. Doggett did an excellent job, and the crowd was attentive and appreciative of the opportunity to attend this informative seminar.
