Patriots Park Mural

Alabaster-raised artist Emma Gilbert recently completed a mural at Patriots Park in Alabaster, honoring the city’s firefighters and police officers. The mural was a collaboration with the City of Alabaster. Gilbert spent 12 days on the project in June working 12-13 hours each day.

Four questions for artist Emma Gilbert

  1. Where did the mural idea come from?
“The inspiration for the mural came from the name of the park itself—Patriots Park. Since the mural is painted on a building that houses the firefighter’s workout facility, we also wanted to honor and recognize the contributions of first responders in Alabaster. Our goal was to celebrate these everyday heroes while incorporating recognizable local landmarks like Buck Creek, the new trail connecting Alabaster’s parks, City Hall, and the historic Old Mill in Siluria.”
  2. How much paint did you use?
“Several gallons of paint with at least 15 cans of spray paint, specifically for detailing the clothing on the police officers.”
  3. When does the documentary come out and how will we get to see it?
“The documentary comes out on June 30th and will be available on YouTube. I’ll be sharing a link to it through my social media channels.”
  1. What does it mean to you to do this project in Alabaster?
“This project meant the world to me because it brought me back to where it all began—Alabaster. Growing up here, I always dreamed of creating something meaningful for my hometown, but I never imagined it could become a reality.”

Welcome Chief Humphries!!

Grant Humphries has been appointed as the new chief of the Alabaster Police Department, following his approval by the Alabaster City Council on June 9.
With over 20 years of progressive law enforcement experience—all with the Alabaster Police Department—Humphries is uniquely suited to take over this critical role. Humphries previously held the position of captain before his promotion. Chief Humphries succeeds former Police Chief Curtis Rigney, who retired on May 31.
“Grant has devoted many years to serving Alabaster and its residents and was the clear choice to lead the department into the future,” says Alabaster Mayor Scott Brakefield. “I’m excited to see the department continue to thrive under his leadership.”
